SPORTS AT BETHLEHEM

While sports might not seem to be an essential part of church life, at Bethlehem, we have discovered that it is a great way to fellowship, bond as a congregation, stay healthy, and reach out to others in the community who like to participate in team sports.

According to Sports Director Troy Johnson, "I think competitive athletic activities promote cohesiveness within our congregation. The team members are like minded individuals out to have fun and glorify God. When we share the field with a non-church team, our play and our conduct speaks volumes to them. Our motto is 'preach the gospel; when necessary, use words.'"

Currently, Bethlehem participates in two primary types of team sports: softball and volleyball.

Softball: The Bethlehem softball team participates in two types of league play. The first is an adult, co-ed, church-sponsored softball league. Sponsored by Heads Free Will Baptist Church, the late-spring league consists of 12-16 churches and concludes with an annual tournament. Last year, Bethlehem placed third in the tournament.

The second league is an adult, coed league sponsored by the Ashland City Board of Parks and Recreation. The league, which plays in the fall, consists of 12-15 teams and also concludes with an annual tournament. Last year, Bethlehem finished the tournament in fourth place.

Volleyball: During the winter, Bethlehem competes in the Ashland City Co-ed Volleyball league. Consisting of 18 teams, the team plays weekly from October to late March, ending with a two-weekend tournament. The well-established league provides fierce competition between teams who have participated for years. Last year, after a well-played tournament, Bethlehem emerged as the league champions.

SPORTS TEAMS PLACE IN LEAGUE PLAY

Congratulations to the 2008 volleyball and softball teams. For the second year in a row, the volleyball team won the league tournament, beating out 16 other teams in a grueling 14-hour day of matches.

The softball team placed second in the adult softball league sponsored by Head's Free Will Baptist Church.
